What if one idea, simple or ambitious, could strengthen local news, open new pathways to economic opportunity, or bring people together through arts and culture right here in State College, PA?
That’s the invitation behind the Knight Foundation Knight Cities Challenge, a $5 million open call designed to surface the most creative, community-centered ideas across 26 cities, including State College.
This opportunity is open to nonprofits, for-profits, individuals, universities, and governments. Anyone with a compelling idea that can make a meaningful local impact is encouraged to apply.
At its core, the Knight Cities Challenge is about access. It removes traditional barriers to grantmaking and invites people closest to the community to bring forward solutions, whether they are fully formed or just beginning to take shape.
Selected projects may receive up to $200,000 in funding, with the expectation that ideas can be tested, implemented, and completed within one year. For those who may not yet have the structure to receive funding, support such as a fiscal sponsor can be worked out as projects move forward.
Projects must focus on at least one of Knight’s three investment areas:
The emphasis is on ideas that are not only creative, but measurable, local, and rooted in community impact, specifically benefiting State College residents.
Applicants do not need to be based in State College to apply, but the project itself must be carried out here and serve the people who live in this community. National organizations are welcome but must partner with a local organization in State College to bring the idea to life.
Submit your application through Submittable and include a clear project plan and budget outlining how your idea will come to life. Applicants complete one application with brief responses covering the project overview, intended impact, team and partners, timeline, and budget. Projects of all sizes are encouraged, with funding up to $200,000 available for ideas that demonstrate measurable, local impact.

State College’s inclusion as one of the 26 Knight communities is significant. It means that ideas generated here, or brought here with strong local partnership, have the potential to be backed at a national level while creating meaningful, lasting change right in State College.
This is an opportunity to think boldly, test new approaches, and bring forward ideas that strengthen how our community connects, grows, and thrives.
You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need a strong idea and a clear vision for how it could make a difference.
Because sometimes, the most meaningful change starts with a single idea and the opportunity to bring it to life.
