The most successful students rarely limit themselves to a single pursuit. They challenge themselves in the classroom, embrace opportunities to lead, discover new interests, and develop discipline to balance them all. Along the way, they begin to understand not only what they excel at, but what truly inspires them.
For Henry Bacon, Bald Eagle High School graduate, that journey has been defined by curiosity, dedication, and a genuine love of learning.
A recipient of the 2026 Dr. John L. Brown Jr. Memorial Scholarship, Henry built an exceptional high school career by balancing rigorous academics with athletics, music, leadership, and a wide range of extracurricular activities. He earned both Honor Roll and Distinguished Honor Roll recognition while participating in varsity soccer, marching band, concert band, jazz band, chorus, orchestra, theater, Career and Technical Center courses, Family and Consumer Sciences, art, government, track and field, and disc golf.
Music became one of Henry’s greatest commitments throughout high school. He participated in marching band from eighth through twelfth grade, first performing on mellophone before transitioning to trumpet. As a senior, he served as section captain after his section earned “Section of the Year” honors during both his junior and senior years. His musical accomplishments also included selection to the PMEA District Orchestra as a French horn player and the PMEA District Band as first cornet.
Henry also distinguished himself on the athletic field. He played soccer from fourth through twelfth grade, earning a starting varsity position as goalkeeper beginning in tenth grade while also contributing at right wing. Along the way, he received both the Most Improved Player and Best Defensive Player awards. He also competed in track and field and has enjoyed playing disc golf for many years.
His leadership extended beyond school as well. During Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW), Henry was nominated to serve as Chief Financial Officer for his team, an experience that strengthened both his leadership and problem-solving skills.
Yet throughout all of his accomplishments, mathematics has remained constant.
“My lifelong passion for mathematics has driven my desire to pursue a degree in the field,” Henry said.
For Henry, mathematics has always felt like a natural fit.
“As far back as I can remember, math has been the most enjoyable and easiest subject for me in school,” he said. “I can distinctly remember my fascination with repeating decimals and wanting to explain to everyone I met why 0.999 repeating equals one in sixth grade. I lit up with excitement in tenth grade when my AP Calculus teacher started talking to me about derivatives and real-world applications of integrals.”
That interest has continued to grow over the years. Outside of class, Henry enjoys learning about new mathematical concepts, whether it’s watching videos that explain complex ideas or reading about different areas of mathematics that spark his curiosity.
This fall, Henry will attend Penn State University’s Eberly College of Science, where he plans to major in Mathematics. While he is still exploring several career paths within the field, he is currently leaning toward actuarial science, drawn to its blend of mathematics, analytical thinking, and real-world application.
Henry’s mathematics teacher, Jesse Arnold, believes his success is rooted in more than academic talent.
“Henry invested himself in the why of the material, questioning the reasoning and justification behind theorems, formulas, properties, and much more,” he said. “His thought-provoking considerations show a deeper level of curiosity beyond the curriculum.”
Jesse Arnold also praised Henry’s character, describing him as a student whose respect for others, collaborative spirit, and positive attitude are every bit as impressive as his mathematical ability.
Receiving the Dr. John L. Brown Jr. Memorial Scholarship through a fund at Centre Foundation brings Henry one step closer to achieving both his academic and financial goals.
“I am incredibly grateful for this scholarship and the generosity of those who make opportunities like this possible,” Henry said. “By combining academic scholarships with part-time employment, I am committed to completing my post-secondary education debt-free as I prepare for a career in the mathematical field.”
As Henry prepares to begin the next chapter at Penn State, he carries with him the same curiosity that has guided him since childhood. Whether on the soccer field, on stage with his trumpet, or solving complex mathematical problems, he has approached each opportunity with enthusiasm, discipline, and a desire to keep learning. Those qualities will undoubtedly continue to serve him well as he pursues a future shaped by both purpose and possibility.
