Q: Why did Centre Foundation create the Fund for Centre County, and what
exactly is it?
A: The Fund for Centre County was created to give Centre Foundation the flexibility to respond to the community’s needs, both now and in the future. Unlike funds tied to a single cause, this fund directs resources wherever they’re needed most.
Q: Why is that flexibility so important?
A: Community needs don’t stay the same. A crisis can arise overnight, or a new opportunity might spark transformative change. Restricted gifts are valuable, but they can only be used for a specific purpose. The Fund for Centre County is unrestricted, which means we can respond quickly and effectively, whether that’s addressing urgent needs or investing in long-term solutions.
Q: Can you share examples of what the fund has supported so far?
A: One of the best examples is our Centre Inspires initiative, which was fueled by the Fund for Centre County. We’ve supported projects that turned underused spaces into vibrant gathering places, inspired creativity, and launched new ideas with staying power. These types of projects simply wouldn’t have been possible without flexible, unrestricted dollars.
Q: How do donors see the impact of their giving?
A: Donors see it through stories, reports, and direct updates from local nonprofits. But more importantly, they feel confident knowing their dollars are always being put to work in ways that meet real needs, even as those needs change. We also accept gifts from Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), which can be especially tax-advantageous for individuals over 70½.
